INTRODUCTION:
For years, substance abuse counseling has been viewed as primarily the business of addiction treatment centers and local mental health centers. However, this is changing because the profile of a stereotypical “addict” has changed from the, “crack house” occupant and the IV drug users in rundown neighborhoods to everyone from the aforementioned to white-collar professional and the grandmother next door who is addicted to prescription medication.
With this change, therapists in private practice, as well in organizations may be seeing an increase of non-traditional clients with addiction issues. Therefore, substance abuse counseling in private practice and organizationally is and should be changing to meet this new shift in the substance abuse problem in America.

In this presentation, we will seek to accomplish the following learning objectives:

Understand the nature and dynamics of addiction
Understand what increases the risk of addiction for anyone
Realities of getting clean and sober maintaining recovery
Fundamentals of addiction counseling (12 core functions, assessment, etc)
Treatment modalities (CBT, Motivational Interviewing, etc)
Treatment planning (Evidence based, insurance requirement, examples, etc)
Referral sources
Reaching out to the potential client with addiction issues
